Articles and notes relating to the history of Rochester cathedral. Sooner or later, I hope to upload the full text of my book (Flight 1997), but I cannot do that just yet. For some long-forgotten reason, the files which I retained do not correspond with the final version of the text – the version sent to the editor, marked up by him, and forwarded to the printers. Before I can release them, therefore, I shall have to go through my files, word by word, to bring them into line with the printed text.
Notes about the Anglo-Saxon charters surviving from the Rochester archive.
Transcripts of the two constituent manuscripts, with notes on the ontogeny of the book.
A corrected and slightly updated version of Flight 1997, appendix 3.
Published in Friends of Rochester Cathedral, Report 1999/2000 (Rochester, 2000), 24–30. This is a line-for-line reproduction of the printed text. I have corrected some misprints but made no material changes.
Originally written in 2002; but this is a shortened version of the paper, first put online in 2010.
Published in Friends of Rochester Cathedral, Report 2002/2003 (Rochester, 2003), 9–14. This is a page-for-page, line-for-line reproduction of the printed text. I have corrected some misprints but made no material changes.
A collection of published drawings of the west front and west portal, first put together in 2006, but revised several times since then. This version (probably the final version) dates from 2018.
A small collection of published drawings of the eastern façade of the cloister. Four drawings by Samuel Prout, published in 1810, are especially worth taking note of.
Prior’s Gate, seen from the north-west, drawn by William Twopeny in Sep. 1843. This corner of the gate only became visible in the 1830s, when the grammar school was demolished.
